Guo Youzhong was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang in October 1934. He is a renowned mathematical and physical scientist, professor, and doctoral supervisor, as well as the former Vice Mayor of Wuhan Municipal People's Government, Vice Chairman of Wuhan Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Director of Wuhan Science and Technology Commission, and former Executive Deputy Director and Director of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Mathematics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
His life was a legendary journey full of ups and downs, embodying a profound patriotism and rigorous scientific attainments, and leaving an indelible mark in the fields of mathematical and physical research, local governance and international exchanges. Born into a distinguished family with a glorious heritage, his father was the renowned anti-Japanese general Guo Chiping.
Immersed in a family tradition of patriotism from an early age, he forged a lifelong aspiration to serve the country through science. Guided by a famous mentor at the start of his academic career, he was assigned to the Wuhan Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences after graduation and had the great honor to study under Professor Li Guoping, a preeminent mathematician and Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Under Professor Li's meticulous guidance, he delved deep into the field of mathematics and physics. In 1956, he published his paper Bernstein Polynomials and Convergence in the Mean, and in 1958, he completed Automorphic Functions and Minkowski Functions, the world's first monograph in this field.
In the same year, as a representative of the scientific and technological community, he met Chairman Mao in Wuhan together with his mentor Professor Li, emerging as a promising young talent in the mathematical and physical science community at an early age.Professor Li Guoping, a founding father of China's mathematical and physical sciences, devoted himself to the research of function theory, semiconductor theory and other fields, took the lead in establishing the Institute of Mathematics and Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Wuhan, and cultivated a large number of top-notch mathematical and physical talents for China.
Carrying forward his mentor's academic spirit, Professor Guo Youzhong has always adhered to his original aspiration for scientific research, pioneered cutting-edge research directions such as field theory, mathematical and physical seismology, and statistical rock mechanics. He has published more than 210 papers and monographs, including 38 monographs, mentored over 40 masters, doctors and postdoctors, and presided over a number of national-level scientific research projects, exerting a far-reaching international academic influence.Professor Guo Youzhong's life was a remarkable legend, and he remained unruffled through all trials and tribulations.
In the 1960s, at the height of his career, he suffered an unexpected disaster. During the "Cultural Revolution", he was falsely accused, first subjected to 18 months of persecution and then sentenced to prison. Fortunately, with the help of an upright military representative, his sentence was commuted to five years. After his release from prison, he lived a hard life with no job, no household registration and only odd jobs to make a living for five years, yet he never abandoned his pursuit of scientific research and quietly wrote millions of words of scientific works, demonstrating extraordinary perseverance and dedication.
In 1978, Comrade Deng Xiaoping learned of his unjust case from internal references and personally cared about it, enabling Professor Guo Youzhong to be rehabilitated and return to work at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. At the age of 45, he cherished every moment dearly, and his scientific research achievements flourished—he published nearly 10 papers and one monograph every year, interpreting the original aspiration and responsibility of a scientist with his perseverance.
He had a profound lifelong friendship with the world-renowned social activist Madam Anna Chennault. He and H.E. C.C.Chang, the founding president of ACFC, were also lifelong bosom friends whose friendship spanned the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China for a century.
Their fathers were both from families with outstanding meritorious service in the Second World War, and both families were non-blood lifelong friends of Madam Anna Chennault.
During his tenure as Vice Mayor of Wuhan, Professor Guo Youzhong personally accompanied H.E. C.C.Chang together with two other vice mayors on his first visit to Wuhan and the Chinese mainland after 1949, witnessing a historic moment of patriotic solidarity among compatriots from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and overseas Chinese.Later, he also personally witnessed and participated in the historic honor of 2001, when H.E. C.C.Chang was specially invited by the Central People's Government, Hubei Provincial Government and Wuhan Municipal Government to present a flower basket on behalf of 50 million overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan compatriots at the commemorative event for the 90th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution. Leading comrades including the then Minister of the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee, Secretary of the Hubei Provincial Party Committee and Governor of Hubei Provincial Government accompanied him in person, leaving an immortal story of friendship between the Chinese and American overseas Chinese communities and local governments in the annals of history.(As shown in the figure above)
Relying on his profound academic attainments and international influence, Professor Guo Youzhong was appointed to an important position at the American Academy of Advanced Sciences founded with investment from the American Chinese Friendship Council (ACFC).Founded by the world-famous scientist Professor Fang Danqun on the global platform of ACFC/BBQ and co-established with investment from TOPSUN Capital (Group) in 2017, the academy has successfully held cutting-edge science forums positioned at "Science + Finance + Industrialization" in the United States, China, Laos and other countries, enjoying a high international reputation. In October 2021, on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution and the 93th birthday of H.E. C.C.Chang, the founding president of ACFC, the World Common Prosperity Assembly was grandly held in Wuhan, at which 30 pure gold meritorious medals were awarded. The first World Common Prosperity Gold Meritorious Medal was personally presented to Professor Guo Youzhong by Jason Lin, the current president of the congress.
A total of 30 representatives from central ministries and commissions, local governments, state-owned central enterprises, listed companies and outstanding private entrepreneurs won this honor alongside him, jointly witnessing a historic moment of promoting common prosperity with the scientific spirit and empowering national rejuvenation with the patriotism.
