Letter on Matters Related to the Response to the People's Daily's Campaign for Soliciting "Stories of China-US Friendly Cooperation"
General Office of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Party Committee:
On December 25, 2024, People's Daily released the news of soliciting "Stories of China-US Friendly Cooperation" from organizations and individuals at home and abroad, aiming to record the deeply moving stories of China-US exchanges and display the beautiful picture of China-US friendly cooperation around the theme of "Crossing Cultural Differences and Inheriting Friendship and Trust".
In order to actively respond to this solicitation activity of People's Daily and tell the "Stories of China-US Friendly Cooperation" well, the Guangxi Representative Office of the American Chinese Friendship Council (ACFC for short) plans to hold a live interview video program of the "Stories of China-US Friendly Cooperation" character interview story meeting in Nanning starting from January 1, 2025. This program will be broadcast simultaneously worldwide through the online platform.
The first episode of the program invites Ms. Mu Lan to tell the story that in 1984, Cary Wolinsky, a photographer from National Geographic of the United States, was invited by the Foreign Affairs Office of the Sichuan Provincial Government to interview Sichuan and received personal reception and full support from Yang Rudai, the then secretary of the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee. At that time, the grassroots police stations in Sichuan Province led by Chen Wenqing (the current member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, the secretary of the Central Secretariat, and the secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission) gave great support. The photography team of National Geographic of the United States conducted a series of photographic interviews on the real humanities, environment, economy, education and farmers' prosperity in China's urban and rural areas just at the beginning of the reform and opening up, and wrote a long documentary report - "Sichuan: The Source of China's Reform" (the profile of the narrator Ms. Mu Lan and the recording content are attached). In the follow-up, the program team will continuously invite people from all over the world who have deep friendship with the Chinese people to tell the little-known and deeply moving "Stories of China-US Friendly Cooperation" and make the "source of strength" of China-US relations flow continuously.
Especially, Yary Wolinsky, the world-famous documentary producer (the son of Cary Wolinsky, the famous photographer of National Geographic of the United States, who participated in the long news report "Sichuan - The Source of China's Reform" with his father in 1984), will be invited to lead a team to come to China again to conduct in-depth filming and recording of the series of news reports "Magnificent Guangxi - Minorities Moving towards Common Prosperity" in Guangxi.
Hereby, we hereby send this letter to your office:
We earnestly request that your Party committee and government assist in notifying the journalists of major media in Guangxi to actively respond to and participate in this activity. The holding of the "Stories of China-US Friendly Cooperation" character interview story meeting aims to deeply explore and spread the stories of China-US friendly cooperation and promote cultural exchanges and mutual understanding between the two countries. The active participation of major media in Guangxi will help expand the influence of the activity, attract more people to pay attention to China-US friendly exchanges, provide rich materials for the solicitation activity of People's Daily, and promote the continuous development of China-US friendly cooperation.
We hereby send this letter and look forward to the support and assistance of your office.

Appendix: Ms. Mu Lan, the Narrator, and the Recording Content
Ms. Mu Lan Remembers "Silk - The Queen of Textiles" and "Sichuan: The Source of China's Reform"
Ms. Mu Lan, currently residing in Shanghai, China, is a senior advisor to the Albright Stonebridge Group of the United States. From 2001 to 2012, she served as the chief representative of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in China and held several leadership positions in The Council of American States in China (CASIC), including the organization's executive secretary. For decades, Ms. Mu Lan has been committed to expanding relationships with Chinese local governments, institutions, and state - owned enterprises. She has rich experience and extensive connections in China - US exchanges and cooperation, and has made positive contributions to strengthening provincial and municipal cooperation between China and the US.

In early 1982, after graduating from university, Mu Lan started working at the China National Silk Corporation. Before long, she was assigned the task of receiving a film crew from National Geographic magazine of the United States to shoot stories about Chinese silk. At that time, Cary Wolinsky, a photographer from National Geographic, and his wife Barbara came to China for an interview with their half - year - old baby Yary. Mu Lan served as an English interpreter and accompanied them to visit silk - producing areas such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Zhenjiang, Nanjing, and Dandong. They conducted comprehensive interviews and reports on the history of silk, mulberry planting, silkworm raising, silk reeling, embroidery, etc., which formed special stories in Reader's Digest and "Silk - the Queen of Textiles", adding a glorious chapter to the overseas dissemination of the contemporary Chinese New Silk Road.
In 1984, Cary Wolinsky, a photographer from National Geographic of the United States, was invited by the Foreign Affairs Office of the Sichuan Provincial Government to interview Sichuan. He received personal reception and full support from Yang Rudai, the then secretary of the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee. Ms. Mu Lan assisted them in conducting in - depth interviews in various places in Sichuan. At that time, the grassroots police stations in Sichuan Province led by Chen Wenqing (the current member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, secretary of the Central Secretariat, and secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission) provided great support. The photography team of National Geographic of the United States conducted a series of photographic interviews on the real humanities, environment, economy, education, and farmers' prosperity in China's urban and rural areas that had just embarked on the journey of reform and opening up, and wrote a long documentary report - "Sichuan: The Source of China's Reform". In September 1985, the cover and the full - text of the entire issue of National Geographic magazine in the United States reported on this. This was the first special report through a world - renowned media for the world to have a positive, true, and accurate understanding of China's reform and opening - up policy. This report had a positive impact on the US government's objective understanding of China's reform and opening up and its policy - making, and had a profound impact on China's subsequent economic take - off.

"Sichuan: Where China Changes Course" comprehensively introduced the new atmosphere of reform and opening up in Sichuan, a major agricultural province. The cover of this issue featured a family photo of a pig - raising specialized household in Sichuan. The people in the picture beamed with joy, full of anticipation for embarking on the road to prosperity in the future.
National Geographic, sponsored by the National Geographic Society of the United States, is one of the most well - known comprehensive periodicals in the world, with readers all over the globe. Its content covers nature, society, history, humanities, and exotic customs. The meticulousness in printing and the excellence of its pictures are also highly praised by readers. It is a publication that news photographers from all over the world dream of publishing their photographic works in.
With its unique vision, the special issue "Sichuan: Where China Changes Course" in National Geographic promptly enabled the Western world to understand the huge changes taking place in China at that time. This has become a classic Chinese moment of that era and will be forever inscribed in history.
